Lebron James just made the ultimate power move today. He purchased an unknown amount of the Boston Red Sox with long time partner Maverick Carter a day after destroying the Golden State Warriors on national television.
Lebron already owns 2% of the soccer giant Liverpool in the English Premier League and has been linked into buying the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream. He is truly one of the most interesting athletes the world has ever seen. He is as successful as Michael Jordan on the court and yet has navigated the business world much more smoothly. He always found a way to be on the right side of history on top of being the author of his own narrative.
When he does decide to hang it all up, he could become one of the biggest business moguls in athlete history. While his 1-billion-dollar lifetime contract with Nike sounds insane, which it is, it pales in comparison to the likes of hedge fund managers and Jeff Bezos.
Still, I find it interesting that while Michael Jordan has navigated his finances silently (net worth of 1.6 billion), Lebron has gone the more public route of his enterprise which will surely grow as time goes on.
