UNLV Makes Big Statement in Opening Game of the Mountain West Tournament

The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels that were once revered as one of the best programs in the country finished its season with a measly 11-14 record (7th in the Mountain West). They made a big statement in the opening game of the Mountain West Tournament against the Air Force dominating the game 5 minutes into the contest. UNLV won with an end score of 80-52.

The Rebels, of course, found themselves down at half time against the Air Force in their last matchup 24-28. In this contest, the Rebels took a lead of 39-21 twenty minutes in. The biggest difference in this game has been Bryce Hamilton who has had a pedestrian year considering he is a top 5 player in the Mountain West. In today’s contest he had 18 points (on 8/13 shooting), 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. Besides just showing up on the scoreboard, Hamilton was present for his teammates. He seemed engaged. It is strange to see such a talented player like Bryce rarely have his motor on for an entire game or heaven forbid a stretch of games for UNLV. Even in this matchup, he was pulled 3 minutes in from coach T.J. Otzelberger after Hamilton allowed 3 easy layups which might of have been the best coaching decision he has made his entire tenure in Vegas. Bryce seemingly got the point after returning to the game and being the leader the team desperately needs.

The other surprise against the Air Force was Mbacke Diong. He had 16 points and 8 rebounds. He is a player that looked to have a big Senior season but came out flatter then a soda left in the Vegas sun during June to start the 2021 campaign. He was more involved offensively and defensively than I’ve ever seen in my 2 years of covering the team. When you look at his length and athleticism, it’s hard to believe he isn’t the best player for UNLV.

David Jenkins also added 21 points and 2 assists.

Do these 2 big performances indicate the Rebels will make a run in this year’s tournament? That is yet to be seen. UNLV was never supposed to play in a close contest against the Air Force at any point this season. Can Bryce Hamilton play with the same intensity moving forward? Can Mbacke Diong continue to play at this level? All will be revealed when UNLV plays Utah State tomorrow.
